Wishing I Were Elsewhere

Question: What is the best vacation spot you've ever been to. Part 2) Why?

For me it probably has to be Cancun. PERFECT white sand beaches. Absolutely gorgeous turquoise water, about 90 degrees. Enough surf to body surf without being rough. And we stayed at an all-inclusive resort. Not having to fight about where to eat or stress over how much dessert or appetizers will tack on to the meal was priceless. Well, no, it was an extra $375. And worth every penny.

1) Hawaii, (Maui)

2) Come on, it's Hawaii! no, really it is just beautiful. Fantastic trails to stop your rental anywhere just about and get out and hike to breath taking waterfalls and very cool bamboo forests.

I loved Playa Del Carmen, which is close to Cancun, but you should see Negril---in Jamaica---oh---the beaches there are AMAZING!!

I'm in the market for a special vacation right now. What resort did you stay in Cancun?

LOVED Grand Cayman Islands....same things you said about Cancun...with out the crazy "spring-break" reputation!

...and I know some will hate on this answer...but the beach 2 blocks from my house....even better is if I had a babysitter ever...that I would love!

My best vacation was at Stanford University, the summer of '57. My dad was there for a lecture series, and took me along carrying a big stack of great novels. There was a gorgeous little courtyard in the center of some almost-deserted building with a pool and a fountain, arched pillars and tons of ferns. I sat beside the cool trickling water, undisturbed by anyone for 3 days, read and dreamed, and basked in the alone-ness (such a joy after a lifetime living with 9 screaming, racing siblings and one father out-shouting the din.)(No wonder my mother died early!)

When I was still in college I did some humanitarian work in Venezuela after some serious flooding. Before I went home, a friend and I stayed on a beach in Choroni for three days (when I say 'stayed' I mean lived and slept). It was just before the tourist season started so we had the beach to ourselves. The jungle was behind us and at either end of the beach were large, very steep verdant hills. You could hear the coconuts dropping, the monkeys howling, and the macaws cawing. We ate in the local restaurants and chatted it up with the owners and residents. The only bad part was the bus ride there and back - it was through very steep mountains on a one-lane dirt road with no guardrails.
