Slum Dog Millionaire

It's not often that I give a rave review for an R-rated movie. But this one just had to be talked about. My brother-in-law saw it at the Austin Film Festival before it was rated and said it was one of the best movies he's ever seen. We were all bummed when it came out with an R rating just before it was released to theaters. I went and saw it tonight anyway (bad me, I know) and I cannot for the life of me figure out why it was given an R rating. My only guess is that the film's people requested it so it would be taken more seriously. I can understand why they would want to be taken seriously--this movie will probably win loads of awards. It's that good. It's inspiring, heart-warming, amazing, and probably deserving of a PG rating, not even PG-13. If you occasionally bend the rules for a great film, skip the mainstream movie hype and see a truly good film this Chrismas--go see Slum Dog Millionaire.

I heard about this movie a few months ago and was not interested. Now I am intrigued. See what a good review from people I trust does?

So are there any sex scenes that would make it R rated? Hmmm. I hadn't heard about it til now. It looks like a romance movie. Would you put it in that category?

I had heard a lot about this movie, as a must see, but now I am definitely intrigued! Wonder if I can get Splenda Daddy to bend the rules?....

Not only are there no sex scenes, there isn't even a full kiss! There is no nudity. There is a little violence, but very vague--nothing graphic or up close. It's definitely PG violence. The only thing I can think of is that there is some heavy content because this guy's life growing up in a slum was kind of rough. But they don't show anything. The camera always pans away, leaving you to assume what happens. So I honestly can't figure out what it got the R rating for. I've seen many PG-13 movies that were way way worse.

Oh, and as for it being a romance, no, I wouldn't put it in that category. There is a thread of romance through the story. But it's very sweet and innocent. The boy meets a girl under dire circumstances when they're very young and they know each other for a while. Then they get separated, and he keeps looking for her as he gets older. But mostly the movie is about the triumph of the human spirit, not the romance. It's defintely not a chick flick.

Lucky Me! I have a ClearPlay DVD player which will delete anything that looks R-rated. I love this gadget (Seagull Books $79) because I've gotten to see tons of R rated movies which have been cleaned up and are now WONDERFUL. Maybe you can see it with me on ClearPlay, and tell me what, if anything, they cut out.

By the way, I have to write you as "Anonymous" cause this blog will not accept me as Grandma Lorie or anything else.

Holly, you won't miss anything from the experience by watching it at home. It doesn't have to be on a big screen like some movies.

p.s. My husband looked it up, and apparently this movie has 4 f-words? I can't imagine missing all four. Seriously, I don't remember a single one! Maybe the accents were so thick I never understood them?

I think you missed them because they are a part of your daily verbage...ha

That trailer looks awesome! I'll wait for the DVD and enjoy it.
